GWCCA buys Metro Chamber building for $10.5 million

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority paid $10.5 million for the Metro Atlanta Chamber building as part of an effort to increase the size of Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.

The Authority on Tuesday said the purchase was made March 23 and that chamber officials are expected to stay in the building for another nine to 12 months.

The GWCCA is trying to raise $25 million to update the 21-acre park. The improvements will include upgrading the Olympic rings water feature and the property’s winding reflecting pool, opening a restaurant and adding more open space for concerts and festivals.

The Woodruff Foundation in November said it will donate $10 million toward the project. Earlier this month the downtown Atlanta attraction relaunched the “Adopt-A-Brick” program that was used to help pay for the park, which was created as a result of the 1996 Summer Olympics.
