One of metro Atlanta’s oldest malls, Greenbriar Mall in South Fulton, has hit a half century.
As part of its 50th anniversary, the mall has been offering sales and inducements this week. For example, shoppers are promised a gift if they spend $300 or more before Sept. 26th.
On that, the last day of the celebration, the mall hosts an event called "Taste of Greenbriar."
The mall, first opened in late summer 1965, sits on a roughly 90-acre site, a former golf course now near the corner Langford Parkway and I-285 – a highway that was yet to be built.
And while Lenox Square mall opened six years earlier than Greenbriar, officials from Greenbriar have contested Lenox’ claim to be the first enclosed mall in the region since Lenox was touted as a “lifestyle center.”
Greenbriar boasts itself as the site of the first Chick-fil-A restaurant located in a mall. And in Facebook posts, Greenbriar calls itself “Atlanta’s first air-conditioned mall.”
The mall is managed by Atlanta-based Hendon Properties, which also handles other properties in Georgia, as well in Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Florida and Virginia.
