You have seen hype videos before, but how often do you see hype videos written and produced by current players on the team?
Auburn freshman linebacker Deshaun Davis released his own hype video titled “The Takeover” on Saturday. The video features various highlights of Auburn players, past and present, as Davis raps over the five-minute video. It even features a clip of an angry hat-throwing Nick Saban.
Rap fans will remember rapper Jay-Z’s song “The Takeover”, which was a diss aimed at fellow rapper Nas, but Davis uses his song to proclaim that Auburn is ready to dominate college football this season.
“It’s the takeover man you finna see that we fell asleep for awhile, but we back,” Davis raps. “Time to go out on this field and get this cash time to take back what’s ours hey you strap up your mask.”
Davis is presumably referring to the 2013 season when he says, “take back what’s ours.” That season Auburn won the SEC and went on to the National Championship before losing to Florida State. Last year Auburn failed to win the West as rival Alabama returned to represent the division in Atlanta. Now it sounds like Auburn is ready to return.
“That offense turnt up Malzahn got them boys on attack,” Davis continues. “That defense juiced now that Muschamp back.”
Davis should be commended for his editing skills on this video. His major is listed on the Auburn website as pre-media studies, so maybe they offered a class?
Either way, Auburn sounds prepared to open the season on Sept. 5 against Louisville in the Georgia Dome. The Tigers hope to return for the SEC Championship game in December.
“It’s our year,” Davis says toward the end of the rap.
We’ll see.
