What going on in recruiting across the state of Georgia and the SEC footprint outside of UGA football coverage? The aim of the AJC College Recruiting Links every morning is to provide a snapshot of just that.
Here are today’s need-to-know stories
1. Tre Lamar signs (something) with Clemson
Roswell 4-star LB Tre Lamar signed his financial aid agreement papers with Clemson this week. Tigernet has the story. What does everyone need to remember about the FAA form? Its that it binds Clemson to Lamar and not Lamar to Clemson.
That means that Lamar could still sign and play elsewhere, but that Dabo Swinney must save a scholarship for him.
Akers committed to Alabama on Tuesday. (Special)
2. Alabama lands nation’s No. 5 RB
Cam Akers picked up a UGA offer two days after Dawg Night last month. That's where he ran a personal best 4.41 in the 40-yard dash. He told the AJC on Tuesday night that UGA finished third in the race for his commitment behind Alabama and Tennessee.
Akers traveled to Tuscaloosa on Tuesday for an unofficial visit with the though in mind to commit. That’s just what he did.
3. Florida picks up a 3-star commitment
Jim McElawin's first recruiting class at Florida already goes 19 deep. 3-star cornerback Jayvaughn Myers became No. 19 on Tuesday.
Myers, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder, is the No. 38 ranked corner in the nation and the No. 62 prospect out of the state of Florida. He's also the brother of 5-star receiver Nate Craig-Myers. Myers or Archer standout Kyle Davis are commonly rated by the recruiting services as the top WR in the nation for 2016. Craig-Myers has approximately 50 offers. Florida is one of those, but he is believed to be leaning toward either Florida State or Auburn, according to 247Sports.
4. Clemson, Florida State and LSU get cozy with Top 5 DB
Coconut Creek, Fla., standout Trayvon Mullen announced Clemson, Florida State and LSU as his three finalists on Tuesday. Mullen — as profiled on the College Recruiting Blog earlier this summer, did make a trip to Athens for Dawg Night on July 18.
Mullen is on the same high school teammate with 4-star receiver Binjimin Victor and UGA DB commitment Malek Young.
5. Legacy OL gets his first offer from A&M
The name Matthews has become as synonymous with the term "blue-chip offensive lineman" as Manning is for quarterbacks. 247sports reporter Brian Perroni reported that 2018 4-star Luke Matthews got an offer from Texas A&M.
That's where current Atlanta Falcon Jake Matthews played. His brother Kevin and Mike Matthews also played in College Station. They are the sons of NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews. Matthews actually went to USC.
