Former Tennessee Vols quarterback has quite a colorful resume.
He’s a former No. 1 pick of the Washington Redskins and briefly started for them before bouncing from the league and becoming a successful real estate mogul. He also served North Carolina as a U.S. Representative from 2007-13. He now has a new gig: private school assistant coach.
Shuler now has a new gig that might surprise some people: According to the Citizen-Times's Andrew Pearson, he will serve as the quarterbacks coach for Christ School in North Carolina.
His son, Navy Shuler, a quarterback, will attend Christ School as an incoming eighth grader.
The assistant coaching job is pretty low-profile for Shuler, the third overall pick in the 1994 NFL draft.
After three seasons in Washington, he played for New Orleans and Oakland before leaving the league after the 1998 season. He finished his career with 15 touchdowns to 33 interceptions and a 54.3 QB rating. From 1991-’93, he had a QB rating of 141.6 and completed 61.6 of his passes for the Volunteers as Peyton Manning’s predecessor.
According to the Citizen-Times article, Navy’s coach at Christ School, Mark Moroz, said Navy has “the best footwork I’ve ever seen,” and will begin his career at the school on the JV team. It’s possible there could be another Shuler in the CFB world in the years to come, so look out for Navy’s name.
Who knows, maybe Heath Shuler can parlay this gig into a coaching job at the collegiate level. His only previous coaching experience was with an arena team in Knoxville.
