Continuing to mix things up, I thought I’d do a look-ahead to Georgia State’s August camp in a different format, A-to-Z:

I’ll continue to post one letter a day on the blog for the next 26 days:

Today is …

Y is for yellow flags

Georgia State was called for 66 penalties last season, totaling 514 yards.

That was a significant improvement over the 2013 season when Georgia State was penalized 77 times for 569 yards.

The yards were similar but the number of infractions were reduced, which was something coach Trent Miles said the team needed to do to improve its chances of winning.

There were still some penalties committed at the worst possible time: Glenn Smith’s kickoff return in the first quarter against Georgia Southern that would have made the score 14-10, for example. The procedure penalty that negated a first down late against Louisiana-Lafayette was another.

However, in close games (decided by three points or less), Georgia State committed a total of two fewer penalties than opponents. So, in the remaining games the Panthers didn’t help themselves enough.

Opponents were flagged 71 times for 637 yards last year compared to just 51 times for 498 yards in 2013.
