Georgia State must win the line of scrimmage to increase its chances at winning. (Georgia State University)
Continuing to mix things up, I thought I’d do a look-ahead to Georgia State’s August camp in a different format, A-to-Z:
I’ll continue to post one letter a day on the blog for the next 26 days:
Today is …
S is for sacks.
Georgia State isn’t good at getting to the quarterback.
The defense had 12 sacks last year, second-fewest in the Sun Belt, and 48 tackles for loss. In short, very few impact plays were being made. Of the 12, nine were made by players that are returning this season.
No sacks likely mean fewer interceptions because the cornerbacks, safeties and linebackers can’t defend forever. Georgia State had three interceptions, fewest in the Sun Belt.
No sacks also mean a high completion percentage. Opponents were successful on 69.3 percent of their attempts.
If teams weren’t as successful running the ball, average yards per game allowed (193.7) would likely have been higher.
