Peach County cornerback Tyrique McGhee was commitment No. 7 for this year's recruiting class at UGA. He committed on a Sunday. He's also another member of the 2016 class that had to deal with an injury after deciding to wear the red and black.

McGhee — a 3-star on the 247sports composite ranking — broke a bone in his right foot while doing speed training. It cost him another track season and the first week of spring practice. He returned for the final week of spring practice at Peach County.

“I broke a bone in my foot,” McGhee said. “Its not near the toe, but its that long bone on the outside of your foot.”

He broke that bone before a visit to Junior Day in Athens back in February and he committed shortly thereafter. He said he’s back, but he still hasn’t gotten his full speed back yet. He’s coming back down to the 4.5 range right now.

“His speed trainer told me that he was running in the high 4.3s in the 40-yard dash prior to his injury,” Peach County football coach Chad Campbell said.

He’ll go both ways this year at quarterback and cornerback at one of the state’s most fertile grounds for players. He weighed in on the recent de-commitments that have happened for the Bulldogs and where his commitment stands right now.

First off, he hated to lose big Archer offensive tackle EJ Price. Price de-committed from the Bulldogs last Thursday, but McGhee said he hopes he comes back to the fold.  He also gave the answer that fans hope to hear from one of their commitments.

“There’s so many things that I see at Georgia making my future bright,” McGhee said. “Its the relationships with those great coaches. Its the tradition of playing for Georgia, but then having a degree from Georgia will set me up for the rest of my life.”

The 5-foot-10, 178-pound senior even expanded on that further by sharing what his response would be if one of the schools he really liked aside from Georgia was to ask him to come for a visit.

“A couple of months ago Auburn called me and asked me to come for a visit,” McGhee said. “I didn’t want to be rude and turn down an invite, but that’s a school I know I wasn’t going to go to. Its not Georgia. I didn’t want to waste their time and I didn’t want to waste mine. So I just let them know nicely. I just decided to be up front about it. I could then spend that time to make another trip up to Athens.”

McGhee said he's really tight with commitment Chad Clay of Peachtree Ridge and big-time UGA target Mecole Hardman, Jr. out of Elberton. He just got back from an all-star 7-on-7 tournament in Florida with those guys. They all played on the same team. Kyle Davis — another big-time UGA target — was also on that squad.

He’s also wearing his recruiter’s hat for UGA. He will be at UGA’s elite “Dawg Night” prospect camp on July 18.

“Mecole is one guy I hope Georgia lands,” McGhee said. “I’ve been working on him. I’m really trying to bring him in. He’d be a real good get for us.”
