The proposal for an early signing period for college football was postponed by an NCAA-related committee on Wednesday.
If passed, the new early signing period would have taken effect for this year’s group of rising seniors in high school, allowing them to sign early during a three-day period in December.
MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said there was consensus of support for the early signing period, but said more time should be given to the oversight committee to make it work better with the overall recruiting calendar, per ESPN's Jeremy Crabtree.
Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson has been a strong proponent of an early signing period, while UGA's Mark Richt (along with most of the SEC coaches) appeared against the idea.
With the proposal being tabled, this year’s only signing period for football will remain at its normal date – the first Wednesday in February.
