The Power Five college football coach who was fired from 2009-2014, more than likely had been on the job for about five years, had won 53.4 percent of his games and had coached in nearly 66 games.
CBSSports.com looked at the 40 Power Five conference coaches who were fired during those years — Charlie Weis was fired from both Notre Dame and Kansas during that time — and found three won national titles.
Those coaches are Gene Chizik (Auburn), Mack Brown (Texas) and Jim Tressel (Ohio State).
Other coaches fired during that time are Mike Leach (Texas Tech), Bo Pelini (Nebraska), Rich Rodriguez (Michigan), Bobby Petrino (Arkansas) and Bobby Johnson (Vanderbilt).
Leach had won 66.1 percent of his games when he was one of six Power Five coaches fired in 2009.
Tressel (2010), Petrino (2011), Chizik (2012), Brown (2013) and Pelini (2014) were other successful coaches fired in the ensuing years.
Less successful coaches include Johnson, two Colorado coaches — Dan Hawkins and Jon Embree — and Weis, who was fired by Kansas last year after losing the Notre Dame job in 2009.
“Furthermore, Joe Paterno’s statistics were not calculated because of a dramatic skewing of the figures,” CBSSports.com wrote. The longtime Penn State coach was fired in 2011.
