Top 10 performers at UGA’s Friday 7-on-7 camp

Those are the ultimate goals for every team and player during the 7-on-7 season every summer. South Carolina power Dorman High did all of the above and then some on Friday’s 7-on-7 team tournament at UGA.

Dorman won the Mark Richt 7-on-7 event for the second straight year and posed with Georgia’s head coach on the grounds of Sanford Stadium.  Colorado State verbal commitment Collin Hill was a big reason why. Dorman stormed through pool play and the tournament brackets on Friday. The Rams never lost a game and scored more points than any other team in action. Its defenders also allowed the fewest points. too.

That’s a good day. Who else shined on Friday in Athens?

TOP 10 PERFORMERS FROM FRIDAY’s 7-on-7 ACTION AT UGA

1. 2017 OG Netori Johnson, Cedar Grove: Johnson wore gold shoes on Friday. That made a lot of sense because his feet are golden for for his size. The 6-foot-5, 330-pounder picked up an offer from UGA on Thursday. His home state is now chasing Alabama for his commitment. He committed to the Crimson Tide earlier this month in a bit of a surprise.

UGA OL coach Rob Sale spent a lot of time working Johnson on Friday with good reason. He’s got the frame and ability to play football for a very long time. Johnson worked with the elite group of offensive linemen on Friday and took on the best pass rushers at camp. He worked at the guard and tackle spots, but it is clear his future is on the interior line.

2. 2016 WR Josh Imatorbhebhe, North Gwinnett: If UGA receivers coach Bryan McClendon could conjure up a list of skills in an ideal receiver recruit, this guy would check off a lot of those areas.  North Gwinnett will be young this year, but the 6-foot-3, 202-pounder will be a matchup headache every Friday night. The four-star receiver is rated No. 34 in the nation at that position by 247sports and that ranking will likely move northward after the summer evaluation period.

Receiver is a position of need in Athens. McClendon’s receiver room just has one commitment for the Class of 2016 at this time.

3. 2016 LB Elysee Mbem-Bosse, Cedar Grove: His best SEC offer is from Auburn at this point, but the perception around him heading into this week was how he fare in space in the 7-on-7 arena. The 6-foot-3, 232-pounder has the body to hold up in the run game, but is he a liability in space? That proof was there on Friday. Mbem-Bossee came out of Friday's action with a good showing. Pass coverage might have been seen as a weakness in his game by some, but what he showed was it might just be his weakest strength.

4. 2018 DB Christian Tutt, Thompson: If this was a list of the Top 10 defensive backs in Georgia regardless of grade level, his name would rank high on that one, too. Georgia offered him at its annual "Dawg Night" last July. That was before the start of his freshman season.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder wasn’t tested much on Friday. Grayson’s “B” squad threw a pass his way, but would have liked to have had it back. He was lined up in a Cover 3 and picked the only pass attempt that came near his island on Friday. He had one other pass defense for the day. He did not give up a catch.

Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt was the first to offer Tutt. He went on to play in the Adidas Freshman All-American Game after his freshman season. That put him on Alabama and Florida State’s radar, among others.

He was offered by those programs after he visited those schools this spring. He’s high on Georgia as his uncle Danny Verdun-Wheeler played for the Bulldogs. He also really likes Alabama and LSU.

5. 2018 DL/LB Justin Mascoll, South Gwinnett: This size athlete got lots of attention from Georgia's coaches on Friday. He was quickly plucked from the pass rusher group and thrown into the fire against some of the top offensive lineman performers at the camp, including Johnson.

He was adept at the speed rush, but has some distance to cover over the next few years. He’s got a great work ethic and takes to coaching extremely well. Check back in a couple of years and he might just be the top player in the state of Georgia. At least.

6. 2016 QB Collin Hill, Dorman: Former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo plucked Hill out of the Palmetto State to join him at Colorado State. Hill did a whole lot for Dorman throughout the day firing balls into windows and taking his checkdowns when they were there. That's a key to performing well on the 7-on-7 stage.  He even led his team in prayer after its back-to-back 7-on-7 team camp championship in Athens.

A few more performances like Friday and Bobo’s really going to have to work hard to retain Hill’s commitment. The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder might be one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the Southeast.

7.  2017 WR Braylon Sanders, Callaway: Sanders stood out on Friday for his size and athleticism and ability and also received special attention from the UGA coachest.  He's got offers from Georgia and Ole Miss and rates as a 4-star receiver according to 247sports.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder might not be another Terry Godwin, but that’s the wrong way to evaluate him. He’s got special hands and very good speed. Check back in another 3-4 months. He might about a dozen offers.

Callaway is also breaking in a new quarterback and that affected his Friday highlight reel. Sanders played both ways and even had several reps at quarterback on Friday.

8. 2016 DB Marlon Character, Grady:  Can this guy play in the SEC? Most definitely. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder looked that part in coverage on Friday.

His offer sheet includes big names like Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Virginia Tech, among others. He has more than 15 offers at this point and would also be on that list of the top defensive backs in Georgia regardless of classification.

 9.  2017 OL Justin Shaffer, Cedar Grove: Shaffer was another member of the same team that the UGA coaches took a hard look at on Friday. The 6-foot-4, 340-pounder was also part of the elite group of offensive linemen worked out on Friday. He could stand to lose some weight, but the next-level potential is clearly there. There are some parts of his game that are just as good or even better than the Alabama commitment that's rated much higher on this list.

10. 2017 WR Trey Parker, Thomson:  Parker was another player the UGA coaches paid attention to on Friday and then pulled aside. Mark Richt and receivers coach Bryan McClendon asked him to come to "Dawg Night" later this summer. He was told that the Georgia coaches would be a topic of discussion later Friday night.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder had a great showing on Friday. If he duplicates that performance at “Dawg Night” then an offer might be on the way.

BONUS ROUND: 2019 WR Jaden Hazlewood, Cedar Grove: The young pups are getting serious looks these days in Athens. That's the new trend. Rising Grayson freshman Owen Pappoe got an offer on Friday. That may be troublesome and even risky to some, but the way top recruiters view that situation now is if a kid looks the part of a junior that's even close to an SEC offer, it makes sense to make that projection.

The 6-foot-1 Hazlewood might not have been one of the Top 10 performers at the UGA camp on Friday, but he already displayed the potential of a kid that will be a great player sooner rather than later. There’s a good dose of production to go along with Hazlewood’s game, too. He was the best middle school player in Dekalb County last fall. Georgia’s player evaluation staff put him in the golf cart and he took a ride inside the Butts-Mehre facility for an official height and weight measurement. That’s a good sign for a player yet to enter the ninth grade.
