ATHENS — Well, the party's over for Georgia's football recruits.
This last year – and for some of them, the last three or four – has been filled with the resident joys and benefits of recruiting. But as of today, all that ends. The last 20 of the Bulldogs’ 30 signees of 2015 are due to report to campus by the end of business on Monday.
Not all of them will.
At least one – offensive lineman Pat Allen of Reistertown, MD — won’t arrive until Tuesday evening due to his graduation from Franklin High School being held Monday night. Another player – linebacker Gary McCrae of Cuthbert – is already attending junior college in East Mississippi. A couple of others are still addressing academic requirements.
One that will most definitely be moving in on Monday will be Terry “Show Time” Godwin. The 5-star receiver out of Callaway High was the guest of honor at a fabulous fete Sunday night at the LaFayette Garden Inn in La Grange. The hope for Georgia is that he’ll be sticking around after the Major League Baseball Draft, of which he is expected to be a part. He addresses that in the video below.
Also, Dogs fans can rest assured that Roquan Smith plans to report on Monday as well. The linebacker from Macon County never signed a National Letter of Intent after switching his pledge from UCLA to UGA on national signing day back in February. But Smith told me in no uncertain terms on a recent visit to Montezuma that he fully intends to be a Bulldog.
The freshmen will be joined with the other eight midyear enrollees from the Class of 2015 and attend an symposium being conducted by former Bulldogs Sean Bailey and Antavious Coates on Monday afternoon. Now owners of a company known as Breakout Training, Bailey and Coates will team with a half-dozen other former UGA and NFL players to offer advice to the freshmen on what pitfalls to avoid and how to succeed at playing big-time college football.
The next party for Georgia’s signees commences next week. The Bulldogs’ strength and conditioning coaches are in charge of planning.
