Virginia quarterback Greyson Lambert is coming to Athens this weekend to visit UGA and discuss a possible transfer, 247Sports.com is reporting. He's heading to Florida after that and plans to visit Mike Bobo's Colorado State program as well, according to the website.
But that’s not the real story here. The real story is, if all that is true, is what it says about Georgia’s quarterback situation. We know that Georgia already made overtures to or at the least had conversations with Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, about a possible transfer.
As everyone knows, the Bulldogs already have three quarterbacks on campus, with a rather notable fourth one committed to join them next year in Jacob Eason of Lake Stevens, Wash. Redshirt sophomore Brice Ramsey and redshirt junior Faton Bauta exited spring practice 1-2 without much separation. Redshirt freshman Jacob Park seemed a distant third based on scrimmage player.
Lambert, who was offered a scholarship by Georgia coming out of Wayne County High School, doesn’t graduate until late June. So it will be the first of July before he could get to his new school. But he has two years of eligibility remaining and will be immediately be eligible to play right away at the school he transfers to.
So, in my opinion, it means one of two things, or both: One, Georgia is not happy with their current options at quarterback; two, one of the current quarterbacks is planning to hit the bricks himself.
Coach Mark Richt, who has repeatedly declined to discuss Georgia’s thinking regarding these alleged interactions, has maintained that the Bulldogs would prefer to have a fourth quarterback in the mix. But the reality is, they don’t really need four scholarship quarterbacks, and rarely have had that situation and certainly not in recent years.
Aaron Murray’s first year as starter, as a redshirt freshman, it was just him and Hutson Mason. That was after Logan Gray moved to wide receiver. A year later they only had three, when Christian LeMay had joined the team.
Now Lambert may not necessarily be considered as a potential starter. Perhaps he’s just coming as insurance. It wasn’t like he was lighting it up at Virginia. As a sophomore, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Lambert started nine games, throwing for 1,632 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Georgia’s coaches will attempt to put a positive spin on this and talk about creating depth and competition. But to me there’s no way to get around this being somewhat of an indictment against the quarterbacks currently on the roster.
