The second that Everett Golson decided to leave Notre Dame, rumors began circulating about where he would transfer.
Several SEC schools — including UGA, South Carolina, Alabama and LSU — have been mentioned as potential landing spots for Golson.
Sources told 247Sports that UGA and South Carolina are favored by Golson. ESPN.com reported in January that Golson had six SEC schools on his list of "two dozen schools" as places to go if he decided to leave Notre Dame.
Golson, who has graduated and could immediately play in the fall, are close to his native Myrtle Beach, S.C.
One problem: The SEC graduate transfer rule.
Here’s what ESPN.com wrote:
The SEC's graduate transfer rule — 14.1.15.1 — states the student-athlete must meet seven criteria. Golson would not meet the fourth criteria, 14.1.15.1d, which states: "The student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution (excluding limited discipline applied by a sports team)."
Golson did not play during the 2013 season after he was suspended from Notre Dame for "poor academic judgment" and was not enrolled in the school. He returned to Notre Dame before the 2014 season.
Golson threw for 3,455 yards with 29 TDs and 14 INTs last year. He threw for 2,405 yards, 12 TDs and six interceptions in 2012, when the Irish finished the regular season undefeated, before losing to Alabama in the BCS national championship game.
No QB — Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta or Jacob Park — has separated himself in the battle to replace Hutson Mason at UGA.
South Carolina looks like it will turn to Connor Mitch to replace Dylan Thompson..
Turnovers have been a problem for Golson, who was battling Malik Zaire for the starting spot next fall.
They both played in Notre Dame’s 31-28 victory over LSU in the Music City Bowl.
