ATHENS – How happy is Trent Thompson? Sp happy that his nickname around his hometown of Albany is "Jolly."
“They call me Jolly because I always keep a smile on my face,” said Thompson, a 6-foot-3, 313-pound defensive lineman from Westover High. “I have a good attitude about myself. Ain’t nothing to be down about. I’m getting everything I want football wise. I’m getting a good education at Westover. I’m meeting a lot of new people. And I’m making my parents and grandparents proud.”
Thompson is making Georgia proud as well. The No. 1-rated recruiting prospect in America according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings, Thompson became the 22nd player to sign in the Bulldogs’ 2015 class when he signed a letter-of-intent with UGA on Wednesday morning.
Thompson has been long committed to the Bulldogs, otherwise they would have been throwing parades down Milledge Avenue. He’s a big impact player at a position of great need for Georgia.
“He’s as naturally strong of a guy, hands and upper body, as I’ve covered,” said Rusty Mansell, a recruiting analyst for 247Sports. “He’s a little bit of a different mold than (Robert) Nkemdiche, but he’s got that freaky strength like him. He’s a little more powerful. I don’t if he’s as quick off the ball, but both players are from Georgia, both are No. 1 players in the country and they’re both going to be playing in the NFL.”
