ATHENS – National signing day started with a thud for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs couldn’t even get to the starting gate before one of their thoroughbreds got out of the paddock. Darius Slayton, a wide receiver from Greater Atlanta Christian and a longtime UGA commitment, tweeted late Tuesday night that he’d changed his mind and decided to sign with Auburn.

Slayton is due to sign letter-of-intent during a ceremony at his school at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The Tigers made a heavy push for the 6-foot-1, 182-pound athlete the last couple of weeks of the open recruiting period. A 4-star prospect, Slayton was considered one of the most important pieces of the Bulldogs’ 2015 class, which entered Wednesday ranked seventh in the nation.

Slayton makes the eighth commitment the Bulldogs have lost heading into national signing day. They’ve flipped five others and will look to even the score on Wednesday. Some other announcements the Bulldogs’ will be bracing for this today:

  • 8:45 a.m. — OL Pat Allen, Reistertown, Md.
  • 11 a.m. — LB Roquan Smith, Macon County (ESPNU)
  • 11:15 a.m. — DB Rico McGraw, Nashville, Tenn.
  • 2 p.m. — OL Nick Buchanan, Dunwoody
  • 6 p.m. — WR Terry Godwin, Callaway

We’ll be monitoring all of Georgia’s recruiting activity all day from signing day central at UGA’s Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, so check back early and often.
