New Georgia Tech RB commit Marcus Marshall
The younger brother of UGA running back Keith Marshall will be playing for the Bulldogs' archrival.
Marcus Marshall, a 3-star running back from Raleigh, N.C., committed to Georgia Tech over Vanderbilt and Wake Forest on Tuesday. His older brother supported the decision.
“Keith was talking ‘family united’ — those were his exact words,” said their father, Marcus Marshall. “Everybody else was like ‘family divided.’ But Keith was like ‘No, it’s family united.’ He said ‘We’re both down there in Georgia at good schools, and we’re going to get the opportunity to play each other.’
“Probably 20 years from now when they’re older, they’ll enjoy going to the Georgia-Georgia Tech games together. Their kids will enjoy the fact of their father’s schools going against each other every year. It ought to be exciting.”
The younger Marshall was a late-bloomer on the recruiting circuit and nowhere near recruited as heavily as Keith, who was the nation’s No. 1-rated all-purpose running back out of the same North Carolina high school (Millbrook) in 2012.
Marcus is a 3-star and ranked as North Carolina’s No. 41 overall prospect. He’s not as big or fast as Keith, but has more than enough speed – and is a better inside runner than his famous sibling.
The 5-foot-9 senior picked up interest from major colleges after a strong senior season. Marcus rushed for 2,198 yards and 30 touchdowns, breaking Keith’s single-season records at Millbrook in those categories.
“I wouldn’t say it wasn’t any one thing that made him pick Georgia Tech,” his father said. “I think Marcus went through the process of evaluating all the options he had. He felt like Georgia Tech had more of the options he was looking for … the full college experience, such as academics. And he was clearly looking for a football opportunity in major-college ball.
“All were good schools, and Georgia Tech was just the best fit.”
Marshall got a late offer from Georgia Tech last month. He is being recruited as a hybrid running back who can play both A-Back and B-Back for the Yellow Jackets.
The Marshall family still has to decide where they sit and what they will wear to next season’s Georgia-Georgia Tech game. The 2015 contest is the only time the two brothers will have chance to play against each other in college.
“I will be on both sides,” their father said. “We’ll get eight tickets. We’ve got family in Atlanta, and this will get more of us in the game. We won’t worry about which side wins the game because they know our family fully supports both of them.”
