GEORGIA
Number of commitments: 25
Expected class size: 28-31
Rankings: UGA's class rates as No. 6 in the nation, dropping two spots since last week.
News of the week: It was a rough week, with wide receiver Van Jefferson of Brentwood, Tenn., reneging on his commitment. Jefferson was wavering even before UGA's coaching changes and finally opened things up after having what he termed as a "successful" visit to Oklahoma last weekend … UGA also missed on one of its top remaining targets when cornerback Donte Jackson committed to LSU on Wednesday … Mark Richt visited Creekside on Wednesday to talk with two offensive linemen committed to other SEC schools. Marquel Harrell (committed to Auburn) respectfully declined Richt's overtures, while Venzell Boulware (Tennessee) said he may consider visiting UGA after he returns from a trip to Ohio State this weekend.
What to feel good about: UGA can finish with a top-five class if it closes strongly. At the top of the wish list is Macon County linebacker Roqaun Smith, at least one more commitment on the offensive line and one at cornerback … Cornerback Chris Williamson of Gainesville likely will make a midweek visit to UGA next week, and he could even bump Florida for the Bulldogs for a weekend visit Jan. 30. He's touring Michigan this weekend.
What to worry about: Several UGA commitments are scheduled to visit rival schools, including five-star Terry Godwin of Callaway. He went to Auburn last weekend, and he'll go to Alabama on Friday. The Crimson Tide are considered UGA's most serious threat.
Quote of the week: "(UGA) has always been his dream school. Every kid in Georgia grows up wanting to play for coach Richt and the Bulldogs." — Smith's coach at Macon County, Larry Harold
Up next: UGA has looked all over the state in desperation for another offensive lineman. After being rebuffed by a few targets, Dunwoody's Nick Buchanan agreed to visit this weekend. He committed to California, but may visit Florida or South Carolina, too.
