The son of a former Atlanta Falcons standout has flipped to Georgia Tech.
David Curry, a 3-star safety from Buford High School, switched his commitment from UVA to Georgia Tech after taking an official visit with the Yellow Jackets this weekend.
His father is Buddy Curry, who was 1980 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and and a two-time All-Pro with the Falcons.

“I was committed to Virginia since the end of the summer,” David told the AJC. “You know, I didn’t feel like the connection was there that should’ve been there. So I opened up my recruiting in the sense of seeing who else was interested. And Georgia Tech had shown interest in me during the playoffs. And that’s really all that caught me eye.
“I decided to go there an official visit, and I really liked it. I bonded really well with the players there. And I just decided that I wanted to stick home so that all my family and friends could come watch me. I thought Georgia Tech was a better fit for me.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder was struggling with the issue of “flipping,” but gained peace about it after this weekend’s visit. Rather than have his parents or high school coach call and inform UVA of his change of plans, Curry spoke directly to Cavaliers coach Mike London.
“I talked to Coach London, who by the way is a phenomenal man,” Curry said. “He’s a great coach, and I have nothing but respect for him. He just said that he’s sad. He was sad that I’m not coming there, but he respects my decision and he wished me the best. I think they took it as best as they could.”
Curry played this past season on the same Buford state championship team as the twin sons of Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof. He projects to play as a hybrid linebacker, and will eventually end up as a Will or Sam Linebacker.
“(Paul Johnson) was happy,” Curry said. “He has very strict rules on committing and not going other places. So his rule is ‘You commit to us, and you don’t visit anywhere else.’ I can see how it might’ve been a little weird for me to visit and be committed somewhere else.
“But the whole coaching staff was very happy for me. They got a little crazy when I told them I wanted to play at Georgia Tech. So it was a cool thing.”
Curry is rated as a 3-star and the state’s No. 168 overall prospect. This past season, Curry led Buford with 75 tackles, along with posting nine pass breakups and two interceptions.
