The calm is returning to the skies after a day of stormy weather that left severe damage in parts of Georgia.
By 10:30 p.m. tornado warnings issued in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties had expired and a cold front moving through the metro area was expected to keep temperatures cool and falling, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Downed trees and strong wind damage led thousands of people to lose power earlier in the day. About 16,000 were without power mid-afternoon, Georgia Power reported.
Severe storm damage was reported in the South Georgia town of Garden City along Highway 80.
A tree fell through a Floyd County home as a girl watched television, Channel 2 reported. The mom said she'd purchased the home six months ago.
In DeKalb County, officials extricated a man trapped in his car on LaVista Road after a tree fell on it, fire spokesman Capt. Eric Jackson said.
He was in critical condition, according to Channel 2.
Downed trees in Fannin County blocked Ga. 5 between Blue Ridge and McCaysville, Sheriff Dane Kirby told Channel 2. And property damage was reported in and around Blue Ridge and near a Chevrolet dealership on the south side of town, Kirby said. The county reported schools would be closed on Friday because many people were still without power late into the evening.
