More school systems have canceled school for Thursday as snow and ice hold a bitter grip on metro Atlanta.

The school systems that have made it official include Atlanta, Decatur, Forsyth, Fulton, Cherokee, DeKalb, Cobb, Paulding, Marietta, Rockdale and Gwinnett.

And there’s plenty of uncertainty about Friday, as well.

In Cherokee County, school system officials said the current conditions and National Weather Service forecasts prompted them to order the Thursday school closing. They told their parents and students to stay tuned to the local news, the school system’s Twitter, Facebook and website for word on Friday.

Parents in Cherokee were already inquiring about possible make-up days. School officials there offered parents assurances that next week's planned February break would go on as scheduled.

“School District staff will with work with the Georgia Department of Education as it relates to options for making up the instructional time lost this semester,” the district said in a prepared statement.

“While current State Board Policy in this regard allows for four lost instructional days due to inclement weather, we are hearing that additional allowances may be sought through the State Board of Education due to two different “State of Emergency” declarations,” the statement said.

On Tuesday, officials in Henry County Schools went ahead and announced that their system would be closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Douglas County Schools had already planned to close Thursday for regularly scheduled holidays. Clayton County School had, too. Both systems reopen Monday.
