Rain started falling in the metro Atlanta area about the time the rush hour started Thursday and headed into Gwinnett County.

While widespread showers and storms are unlikely in metro Atlanta, spotty showers and heavy downpours are possible, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Any storms metro Atlanta gets won’t be as bad as those expected in far north Georgia, which is under a risk of thunder, lightning, heavy downpours and gusty winds.

Showers started in northern Georgia, with heavier rainfall near Chattanooga and Rome. Douglasville residents got rain about 4:15 p.m., Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

“Again, most of us won’t see it,” meteorologist Karen Minton said. “And by the time we lose that daylight and the heating goes away, we’ll really lose the emphasis because it’s mainly run by the heat of the day.”

Temperatures were 86 degrees in Atlanta, 79 degrees in Blairsville and 85 degrees in Griffin just before 8 p.m.

Rain chances will increase later this week. There is a 30 percent chance of rain Friday and a 40 percent chance Saturday through Monday.

Even with rain, metro Atlanta remains under a drought.

Nearly all of north Georgia is in a severe drought, which means crop or pasture losses are likely, water shortages are common and water restrictions can be imposed.

Don’t worry. There are no new watering restrictions in effect.
