Metro Atlanta may not get a chance to dry out from Thursday’s storms this weekend as more rain heads this way.

The chance of showers is only ramping up Saturday and Sunday, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said. While Atlanta’s off to a dry start, the rain should start to arrive sometime after lunch.

“I do expect more more showers to form about lunchtime in the mountains, and then it’ll pretty much become widespread across the metro area as we get toward the afternoon,” Burns said.

The storms aren’t expected to be severe, but rainfall accumulation is the biggest threat, he said. During Thursday’s storms, some areas of north Atlanta and DeKalb County picked up more than 3 inches.

Despite the forecast, the chance of rain increases Sunday, so Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon recommends squeezing in those outdoor activities today.

“It’s going to be one of those weekends where we have to duck and dodge from the showers and storms,” Deon said.

The good news is that all that rain and cloud cover should keep temperatures slightly below average.

While it’s typically about 90 degrees this time of year, Saturday’s high is only expected to reach the mid 80s.

The rain should die down in the evening, but a shower or two is still possible as the Braves take on the Cincinnati Reds at 7:20 p.m. in SunTrust Park. The Braves also host the Reds at 1:20 p.m. Sunday.

Because the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium closes, soccer fans won’t have to worry about the rain when Atlanta United hosts the LA Galaxy at 5 p.m. Saturday. Downtown traffic will likely pick up shortly before the game starts.

Construction will also affect traffic, and the Georgia Department of Transportation has lots of active projects.

Two right lanes of I-20 West will be blocked at the Downtown Connector from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., GDOT said. From 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., a left westbound lane of the interstate will also be blocked at Thornton Road.

In Buckhead, a right lane of Roswell Road will be blocked in both directions at Piedmont Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., GDOT said. And in Sandy Springs, a right lane of Mt. Vernon Road will be blocked in both directions at Ga. 400 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the Southside, Camp Creek Parkway will be blocked in both directions at Old Fairburn Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday has a 60% chance of rain, which will decrease to 40% on Monday. Temperatures are expected to increase as the week progresses and the chance of rain subsides.
