SATURDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: After cloudy morning, sun will shine over North Georgia

A partly cloudy sky is on tap for North Georgia on Saturday.

On Friday, the sun barely peeked through the clouds and rain, leading to a chilly and dreary day.

Saturday and Sunday couldn’t be more different.

“It’s going to be great for the weekend,” Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said. “Lots of sunshine as we get into late Saturday and most of Sunday.”

Aside from a few overnight showers, metro Atlanta has no rain in the forecast either day, Burns said. An approaching cold front will bring drier air to North Georgia and will actually let the state warm up considerably.

Atlanta didn’t escape the mid-40s Friday but is forecast to hit 54 degrees today. The cold front will also break up what lingers of Friday’s overcast, cloudy sky, letting the sun shine for most of the afternoon, Burns said.

“We’ll start off with a mostly cloudy sky, but by 3 p.m., we’ll be mostly sunny in northern Georgia,” he said.

The remaining high school teams playing their state championship games at Georgia State Stadium drew the lucky straw by playing Saturday instead of during Friday’s cold, wet weather.

The first game between Irwin County and Marion County kicks off at 10 a.m., while the last game between Marietta and Lowndes is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Ahead of Marietta’s game, expect some delays on I-75 as parents and students make their way south.

Those heading to the evening game may want to dress in layers since the temperature is expected to drop quickly after sunset, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

“Overall, it’s going to stay pretty breezy,” she said.

The weather shouldn’t hinder Georgia Department of Transportation crews from getting work done. Drivers should expect delays on Ga. 400 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. when a right northbound lane will be blocked at Lenox Road.

Drivers may also see delays in northwest Atlanta as crews work to repair a water main break at the intersection of Harwell Road and Delmar Lane, Channel 2 reported.

Sunday will continue Georgia’s sunny streak until the late afternoon, when a few clouds will reappear, Burns said.

“Clouds will thicken up (Sunday night) and more rain will return by Monday — maybe even a few thunderstorms,” he said, hinting at Monday’s 30% chance of rain.
