Metro Atlanta's 42-day, record-breaking streak without rain is about to end, but before it does a high wind warning is in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday
"Showers and thunderstorms are just hours away," Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
The high wind warning is for for Gilmer, Pickens, White and other North Georgia counties. That means those areas could get sustained winds of at least 35 mph and gusts of at least 50 mph.
“I am concerned about the possibility of downed trees and power outages,” meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
The warning does not extend to metro Atlanta.
The most northwestern parts of Georgia will get the first round of heavy showers earlier than metro Atlanta, by about 10 p.m. Monday. Then, the storm will move eastward.
Rain is expected to hit metro areas with heavy downpours around midnight Monday.
There is a 20 percent chance of rain Monday, a 90 percent chance Tuesday and a 100 percent chance Wednesday, Channel 2 reported.
By 3 a.m. Tuesday, a diagonal line of heavy downpours will stretch from LaGrange to Blairsville.
Most of the showers will taper off by Tuesday's morning rush hour. And by the time the storm system completely tapers off, by noon Tuesday, it could dump up to 2 inches of rain in parts of metro Atlanta, Monahan said.
Then a second storm system will hit metro Atlanta Wednesday and bring an extra 2 inches of rain.
In the meantime, expect temperatures in the 60s and windy conditions.
Temperatures were 67 degrees in Atlanta, 55 in Blairsville and 68 in Griffin at 8:30 p.m.
