As rain started to pick up in the thick of graduation season, schools began to rethink graduation plans Friday in metro Atlanta.
The rain forced Sandy Creek High school in Fayette County to move from their school football field to a church in Austell, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Loganville High School in Walton County postponed its ceremony planned for Friday night until noon Saturday, the news station reported. About 4,000 people were expected at the ceremony.
“You’ve got outdoor concerts, graduations, a lot of Friday evening plans that will be impacted by at least some scattered showers,” meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
Carrollton High School pushed its graduation from 8 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the Carrollton City Schools Facebook page.
Tri-Cities High School moved its ceremony to its gym and Banneker High School changed their start time to 10 a.m, Channel 2 reported.
Rain cut across the heart of metro Atlanta and impacted Carroll, Clayton and Cobb counties as well as Atlanta by 12:15 p.m., the television station reported.
That rain will continue off and on through the afternoon rush hour, which could impact the drive home from work.
But the greatest risk of strong and even isolated severe thunderstorms will stay south of metro Atlanta, Nitz said.
Only isolated showers will continue through 9 p.m. in metro Atlanta. Temperatures tonight will be in the upper 50s to low 60s.
By 11 p.m., storms should wind down. Only light, spotty showers are expected overnight and early Saturday, meteorologists said.
Rain is expected to clear out by sunrise and give way to partly cloudy skies by Saturday afternoon.
Highs in the upper 70s are expected Saturday and Sunday. Warm weather returns next week with temps in the 80s.
