Thinking of hitting South Georgia highways Friday for the Labor Day weekend? Don’t.

Even though Hermine has been downgraded to tropical storm status, traveling by car is not recommended by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

“Travel is not recommended today,” the DOT said on its website. “Both Savannah and Brunswick ports are closed Friday.

“Motorists who must travel on Friday should stay tuned to weather outlets and plan accordingly,” the alert on the website said. “Isolated tornadoes are also possible with this weather system.”

Rainfall rates will increase and could produce an additional 3 to 5 inches through Friday evening, according to the DOT alert. As the storm moves up the Eastern seaboard, the rain will diminish.
