Tuesday marks the 40th day in a row of 90 degree and higher heat, meteorologist Brad Nitz said. And the rest of the week into the weekend is expected to stay in the mid 90s.

Isolated showers and brief downpours developed west and southwest of Atlanta Tuesday afternoon, but only scattered storms should be expected this evening.

Nitz said those storms could be strong, but with only a 40 percent chance of rain any wet weather won’t be widespread.

“And where these isolated storms have not yet developed, well we’re enjoying quite a bit of sunshine,” Nitz said. “Well I say ‘enjoying’ if you’re looking maybe out through the window from the comfort of the air conditioning because it is hot and muggy.”

Any rain will dry up by the night’s end and Wednesday is expected to stay dry and sunny, Nitz said.

Temperatures were 75 degrees in Atlanta, 76 degrees in Blairsville and 75 degrees in Griffin just before 10 p.m.
