Temperatures hit 88 degrees Friday, tying the record high set in 1894 and taking metro Atlanta from warm and damp to hot and dry.

The metro Atlanta area hit 87 degrees at 2 p.m. and tied the 88-degree high shortly before 5 p.m., Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said in a tweet. Nitz said Friday evening will bring cooler temperatures and Atlanta won't break that high for the day this year.

Athens also tied its record high temperature of 90 degrees Friday, according to Channel 2.

It will be the “perfect evening to spend outside,” Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said. But cloud cover may increase overnight and Saturday starting about 11 p.m. Friday. Storms are expected about noon Saturday and may persist throughout the day.

The rain is expected to taper off by 10 p.m., meteorologists said.

However, the wet weather won’t cause significant drops in temperatures.

Saturday’s high is expected to reach 83 degrees, with Sunday’s high dropping slightly, to 79 degrees.

Temperatures were 86 degrees in Atlanta, 81 degrees in Blairsville and 86 degrees in Griffin just before 5 p.m.
