Temperatures will again chill overnight, but a lighter wind and clearer sky will take metro Atlanta into Saturday morning, Channel 2 Action News meteorologists said.

Temps were 47 degrees in Atlanta, 40 degrees in Blairsville and 47 degrees in Griffin just after 1:40 p.m.

“We’re headed down to lows in the 30s,” meteorologist Brad Nitz said, temperatures “climbing up through the 50s as high pressure builds up tomorrow.”

A warming trend will bring Atlanta temps to the mid-60s by Sunday, and the city will get “lots of sunshine between now and then,” Nitz said.

Temperatures will reach the low 60s Monday, also when clouds and scattered showers might return, Nitz said. But the better chance for showers and storms is midweek.

Windy conditions, the last traces of a storm earlier this week, remained and caused a Gwinnett County fire that displaced 22 residents to intensify, Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

Firefighters responded about 8 p.m. Thursday to a report of a fire at the Valencia Park Apartments in the 3500 block of Peachtree Corners Circle.

The blaze, which caused heavy damage to five units in the eight-unit building, was burning in the center of the building’s attic and floor system, Rutledge said.

Then wind, threatening to spread flames to a nearby property, pushed the flames near one corner of the building, where firefighters were able to contain them.

The wind-driven flames were so intense, they burned the roof off part of the building, Rutledge said. But no one was injured.
