The biggest party of the year is coming up on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, just in time for your vacation.

Carnival is April 2-30 and is just a 3 1/2- hour flight from Atlanta. Flights leave daily with Delta and American Airlines, with nonstop service offered with Delta.

So now there's no excuse not to make your Caribbean escape, especially since American travelers don't need a passport to the island territories.

This year's Carnival theme is "Nothing is more Fabulous than Carnival in St. Thomas."

There will be pageants and calypso shows, something to suit the entire family. Toward the latter days of the celebration, the parties intensify with J'ouvert, fireworks, parades for kids and a separate one for adults. That's when dance troupes represented from every island in the Caribbean show off their fabulous costumes full of jewels and feathers.

You can't go to the islands and not indulge in the food. During Carnival, stop by the Food Fair booths to sample flavor from all of the Virgin Islands (U.S. and British).

Everything from fried fish, jonny cakes, tamarind stew, shrimp, beef and salt fish pates, kalaloo, mango and pineapple tarts, maubi, passion fruit juice and a ton of other Caribbean delicacies.

St. Thomas is home of Charlotte Amalie, the capital city of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Through the alleys of the historic Danish-constructed buildings is the heart of discount shopping for high end goods. People travel from all over the world to get discounts on jewelry, alcohol, china, crystal, perfumes, art, clothing, watches and cameras.
