Atlanta United possibly is interested in purchasing Miguel Almiron from Newcastle, according to a person familiar with negotiations.

Almiron played for Atlanta United in 2017 and ‘18 before he suddenly was sold to Newcastle for a reported fee that reached $24.7 million. Atlanta United paid Lanus less than $8 million for him before the ‘17 season. Almiron showed up to training the day before the sale with the understanding that he wasn’t going anywhere and to report to training the next day. The next morning, the deal was struck with Newcastle.

Almiron’s current transfer valuation, according to transfermarkt.us, is $16.5 million, but Newcastle needs to sell players to comply with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules. Atlanta United may be able to purchase him for a lower price.

Almiron, 30 years old, scored 22 goals with 30 assists for the Five Stripes. Using his blazing pace, he helped them win the MLS Cup in 2018. He has scored 30 goals with 12 assists in 221 appearances for Newcastle.

Atlanta United has two Designated Player slots open. President Garth Lagerwey said last week they are pursuing a striker and a winger or midfielder.

Atlanta United declined to comment on reports of its interest in Almiron.
