A 5-year-old Detroit girl is in stable condition after being accidentally shot in the head overnight Sunday by her 4-year-old brother.
The shooting happened amid a spate of weekend shootings across the nation that killed dozens of people, several of whom were children.
The wounded child in Redford Township was identified as Karina Norwood, who suffered a brain bleed and needed stitches when she was admitted to Children's Hospital, according to a report by WXYZ Action News 7.
A 3-year-old and a 1-year-old were also inside the home when the shooting happened.
The Redford Township Police Department seized a handgun at the scene.
The parents could face charges and are cooperating with the investigation, according to Capt. Al DiPrima.
The shooting happened inside a mobile home off Plymouth Road in Redford Township just before 2 a.m. Sunday, the station reported.
As the girl slept, the younger child inexplicably found the firearm, which was kept out of reach but not locked away, News 7 reported.
DiPrima told the station that “the 4-year-old may have been standing over” his sister when the gun went off.
The children’s mother said her son may have mistook the weapon for a toy gun.
“I’m hurting down inside because of what happened to my baby,” Melissa Kiser told Action News. “I just advise all you parents to put up all guns and keep them away from your kids.”
The case will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine if charges will be filed.
