Investigators believe an electrical fire destroyed a Haralson County home Tuesday morning, killing a 2-year-old boy and hospitalizing two family members, according to the state insurance commissioner’s office.
Firefighters were called to a South Kelley Street home in Tallapoosa around 10 a.m. and arrived to find the home engulfed. The boy perished in the blaze, which also injured his mother and a sibling, according to a spokesman the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office.
The boy was identified late Tuesday as Levi Andrew Robinson, Haralson Coroner Danny Hutcheson said.
A pregnant woman, believed to be the children’s mother, suffered burns to her hands and face, Glenn Allen with the commissioner’s office said. The woman, whose name and age were not released, was transported to a Cobb County hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and for observation, Allen said.
A 3-year-old child was also taken to a local hospital for observation, but was not believed to be seriously injured, Allen said. A school-age child and adult man were not at home when the fire ignited, he said.
Arson investigators arrived at the home shortly after 1 p.m. as firefighters continued to battle hot spots. Investigators believe the fire was electrical in nature and was not suspicious, Allen said. An electrical engineer is expected to return to the home Wednesday for further investigation.
Tallapoosa is about 60 miles west of downtown Atlanta, off I-20.
