A Nativity scene in Australia is causing upset because the baby Jesus is black.
Melbourne Parliament member Lizzie Blandthorn has the doll in her office window display. Australia's 7 News reports that people have filed complaints, calling the doll offensive and inaccurate.
Blandthorn said, “They don’t understand. I’m Christian myself and I think it’s good.
“It doesn’t matter at all, when we cut our skin we’ve got blood there. I think that’s more important - how Jesus was, what he did for us."
"I wasn't intending to be provocative," Blandthorn told 3AM Mornings. "The great thing about the district I represent is that people come from all corners of the globe, all walks of life and every age. It was meant to be a lovely reflection of the true spirit of Christmas."
Except for one change, she does not plan on altering the display. “We did have one complaint that the doll appeared to be a girl. We covered the nether region of the doll, but it is, for heaven’s sake, a doll.”
She said the response to the display has been overwhelmingly positive.
