Two women from Marietta are in the Cobb County Jail accused of distracting a woman and taking her purse while she was out shopping, and the duo could soon face charges for similar incidents in neighboring counties.

Authorities believe Jessica Marshall Pina distracted a woman while Shayla Janae Sutherland took a wallet from her purse the evening of Nov. 12 at the Walmart Supercenter on Cobb Parkway in Acworth, according to warrants out of Cobb County. After the wallet was taken, the two allegedly used several of the victim’s credit and debit cards at nearby retailers, making purchases of hundreds of dollars each.

The two each face a theft by taking charge and multiple card theft and card fraud charges.

Sutherland also faces charges of robbery and simple battery for an alleged Nov. 29 incident at the Walmart on Ernest Barrett Parkway in Marietta. Warrants accuse her of reaching over a bathroom stall door and grabbing a woman’s purse and its contents as the victim was sitting in the stall, then kicking a man in the stomach when he tried to prevent her from leaving with the stolen items.

Channel 2 Action News reports that the two women were identified by investigators as those involved in a series of thefts at a Walmart store in Hiram. Surveillance video showed a woman conversing with a shopper, then a few minutes later, inviting the shopper to pray over her problems. The other woman then moved in to take cash and credit cards from the shopper’s purse.

The news station said the women may also be linked to crimes in Douglas County as well.
