The woman whose sport utility vehicle went into a Cherokee County pond in the early morning hours of Dec. 29 has died.

Shanell Latrice Anderson, 31, of Sandy Springs, died Friday afternoon, Georgia Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tracey Watson said. Anderson, though she had been pulled from her vehicle by firefighters, was in critical condition after she had been taken to North Fulton Hospital.

She was a contracted employee for an Atlanta Journal-Constitution distributor. Officials said she was out delivering papers at the time of the incident.

Anderson lost control of her Nissan Xterra about 4:45 a.m. as it was heading east on The Fairway toward Batesville Road, near Milton, officials previously said. It left the roadway and entered a pond, becoming completely submerged.

Firefighters were able to pull Anderson from the vehicle after using a pounding tool to break a window. Though the SUV was mostly filled with water, they found her in an air pocket in the back corner of the vehicle.

Fog may have been a factor in the crash, Channel 2 Action News previously reported.
