An Arctic blast will send temperatures plummeting into the mid- to upper teens by daybreak Thursday, but that’s only part of the story, as the frigid temperatures will combine with brisk winds to push the wind chill into the single digits.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for all of north and central Georgia that was set to expire at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said most of north Georgia will see wind chills between 0 and 10 degrees Thursday morning, while those in the mountains could see them hit anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees below zero.

Burns said low temperatures across metro Atlanta early Thursday will be around 12 degrees. Temps won’t get much higher during the day, even with the help of sunny conditions.

“As we go on through the morning, we’re going to see plenty of sunshine, but at noontime, we’re still sub-freezing,” Burns said, adding that most residents will see temperatures in the mid-20s while only a few areas south of the metro area will be lucky enough to see temps sneak above the freezing mark.

Lows will be in the low 20s early Friday and Saturday, with highs both days in the low 40s, Burns said. Temperatures Sunday should climb into the mid-40s after starting out in the upper 20s, he said.

Authorities said a man’s death before daybreak Wednesday at a downtown bus stop could have been weather-related as predawn temperatures dipped to around freezing.

The man was found dead shortly before 6 a.m. at a bus stop at the intersection of Alabama and Broad streets, just across from the MARTA Five Points rail station.

An investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday evening that the man’s identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin, and officials are still waiting on toxicology reports before making a ruling on his cause of death.
