A carjacking can happen at the blink of an eye, but there are some precautions you can take if you ever find yourself in such a volatile situation.

Business Insider interviewed a former Navy SEAL to find out how people should respond if they find themselves the target of a carjacking.

First, be sure to leave yourself plenty of space in between vehicles so that you have enough distance to escape.

With that being said, don’t be afraid to drive onto sidewalks or cross over the lines to make it to safety.

Another measure to consider is to keep your windows rolled up to prevent a possible physical encounter.
