Two sought in assault on Roswell police officer at apartment complex

Police: Officer opens fire on men after knife attack

Authorities are looking for two men who cut a Roswell police officer in the face and arm during an altercation Wednesday morning.

According to Roswell police spokeswoman Officer Lisa Holland, the assault happened at the Champions Green apartments off Holcomb Bridge Road, where Officer John Lathem was patrolling following a recent shooting and saw two suspicious men. When he attempted to speak with the two, a struggle ensued, and Lathem was cut with a knife on his face and forearm.

Both men fled on foot, and authorities searched the area around the apartment complex. Joining Roswell police were K-9 units from Alpharetta and Johns Creek police, as well as officers from Milton and Dunwoody police.

The two suspects were described as black males wearing black hooded sweatshirts. One man had a question mark graphic on the front of the sweatshirt. The other man was described as heavy set with dreadlocks.

Holland said that while officers have exhausted all leads in their search of the area, the investigation continues.

Lathem, who has been with Roswell police for 15 years, received numerous stitches in his face and arm. He is expected to make a full recovery.
