The trial of a woman accused in the stabbing death of a northwest Georgia convenience store clerk began Monday in Dalton.

The Whitfield County jury started hearing the case of aspiring model, dancer and rapper Skyy Mims. The Detroit woman is charged with murder in the death of 37-year-old Dahyabhai Chaudhari in March 2014.

Mims allegedly fled the convenience store with lottery tickets and cash. Her lawyer contends the arrest resulted from mistaken identity.

The killing stunned the local community, where the victim was popular. Mims was arrested in Bartow County.

Within hours of being identified as the suspect in the crime, the then 21-year-old woman was in custody. And it was tips from the community that helped lead local, state and federal investigators to her.

“We got a fantastic lead,” GBI Special Agent Mike Ramey said after the arrest. “This was an absolute true partnership to solve this.”
