A truck hit a bridge in Jackson County on Monday, shutting down the southbound lanes of I-85 for more than three hours.

The lanes at exit 129 were closed about 8:30 a.m. after the flat bed truck hit the Jessie Cronic Bridge at Ga. 53, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said. The lanes reopened about noon.

The road will be closed for several weeks while two beams are repaired, said Katie Strickland with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

A scooper on top of the truck hit the bridge, according to Braselton Assistant Police Chief Lou Solis. The scooper had its arm in the air when it struck the bridge, causing significant damage.

When debris came down, it caused damage to three cars. All three had to be towed from the scene.

One person had minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

Jackson County is more than 60 miles from downtown Atlanta.
