A Covington truck driver and minister was killed Tuesday afternoon when he stopped on the roadside on I-285 just outside Atlanta, police said.

Dwight Moody, 54, died at the scene of the accident just north Cascade Road, authorities said.

Two southbound right lanes just north of Cascade Road were closed for up to two hours following the accident, authorities said.

About 3:30 p.m., Moody pulled over in the right shoulder of the highway less than a half-mile north of the Cascade Road exit and was struck and killed by a passing car, Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Police initially believed he was changing a flat, but later said he was inspecting the flatbed trailer of his 18-wheeler.

The driver who hit Moody, Benjamin Head, stopped, police said.

Head has been charged with homicide by vehicle and failure to maintain lanes, both misdemeanors, Lester said.

Moody was a speaker and teacher at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Covington, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Since August, at least three people have been killed on metro Atlanta interstates when they pulled on the side of the road.

A brother and sister were killed Aug. 26 as they changed a tire near on I-75 in Morrow.

Last month, a man was killed on I-20 near Wesley Chapel Road in DeKalb County when he stopped to help someone stranded on the shoulder of the highway with a flat tire.
