An overnight fire that killed a Thomas County man has been ruled accidental.

Homer Lewis Hayes, 85, died in the 1 a.m. blaze that destroyed a home on Alexander Street in Thomasville, according to Glenn Allen, spokesman for the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s office.

Allen said fire investigators had determined the fire originated in the living room of the home and was the result of a leaking natural gas leak ignited by an open flame from an appliance.

Thomasville is about 225 miles south of Atlanta, near the Florida state line.
