‘This Is Us’ writer Jas Waters dies at 39

Waters reportedly died by suicide

A former hip-hop journalist and writer for NBC’s “This Is Us” and Showtime’s “Kidding” died June 9, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office.

Fans and friends shared the news of the death of writer Jas Waters, 39, on Wednesday. Writers for “This Is Us” shared a tribute to the Illinois native on Twitter.

The coroner’s office revealed that Waters died by suicide. “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman released a statement.

“This news took my breath away. Jas was absolutely brilliant and had so many stories still to tell. She made an indelible mark on our show and my heart breaks for her loved ones. RIP @JasFly.”

Waters was an author, journalist and television personality. She worked on the reality series “GOSSIP GAME” and helped write the Taraji P. Henson film “What Men Want.” She formerly wrote for VIBE Magazine.

Friends of Waters and those who worked with her in the past, including television executive producer and “Insecure” creator Issa Rae, paid tribute.
