Q: The AJC reported that the Social Circle High School football team ended a historic losing streak. Their nickname is Redskins. Do they get a lot of pressure to change the name, just like the team in Washington?
—Don White, Atlanta
A: Todd McGhee said he hasn't received any complaints about the high school's nickname in the four years he's been superintendent of Social Circle City Schools, which is in Walton County.
“It’s a legitimate question. There’s been controversy in other places, and we are aware that we may have to address it one day,” McGhee told Q&A on the News.
The Walton Tribune surveyed readers a few years ago and the response was overwhelmingly supportive, McGhee said.
“This is a small town. It’s very conservative,” he said, adding that he thinks residents of other Walton County towns don’t feel strongly about the Redskins nickname.
Social Circle’s football team, which competes in Class AA, ended the state’s longest losing streak at 36 games in its opener on Aug. 28 and then won its second game on Sept. 11.
“We’ve turned it around,” McGhee said.
