Q: What is the status and projected completion date of the new interchange on Interstate 85 at McGinnis Ferry Road?
ANDREW LEDERMAN, LAWRENCEVILLE
A: Construction is expected to start in spring 2023, according to Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett County received the engineering funds in 2018, but right of way and construction funds won’t be available for several years, Joe Sorenson, a county spokesman, told Q&A on the News in an email.
Federal engineering funds were authorized in May 2018, followed by an initial concept team meeting last June. The concept phase is anticipated to be completed this summer. At this point, 85 percent of the survey work is complete and 25 percent of the engineering work is complete. The engineering work is expected to be completed by summer 2022. The right of way component is scheduled for fall 2020 to summer 2022.
Q: Is there any data that can tell how much the average homeowner can save by converting all their lights to the new LED lights?
WILLIS REASONS, ROSWELL
A: Energy.gov, the U.S. Department of Energy's website, includes data and charts that compare the cost of using regular light bulbs versus LED lighting. One graphic states that replacing your five most used bulbs with Energy Star options can save up to $75 annually.
Energystar.gov, a site affiliated with a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program, includes info on various types of lighting and has a downloadable savings calculator for Energy Star bulbs. The website states that LEDs use 25 to 30 percent of the energy used by halogen incandescent bulbs.
