Q: We were reading the review of “The Light in the Piazza.” It said it was done after a movie. I could have sworn I read a book by that name. Is there a book with the same plot?
—Julie Croft, Decatur
A: "The Light in the Piazza" is a 1960 novella written by American author Elizabeth Spencer.
The book was the basis for both the 1962 movie – “Light in the Piazza” — starring Olivia de Havilland, Yvette Mimieux and George Hamilton, and the musical – “The Light in the Piazza” – which was developed in 2003-04 and debuted on Broadway in 2005.
It won six Tony Awards, including for Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Victoria Clark, who played Margaret Johnson).
