Q: In the list of final results of the PGA Championship, there are numbers in parentheses after some of the players’ names, which I believe are FedEx Cup points awarded. Why do some players not receive any?
—David Nugent, Canton
A: Only golfers who are regular members of the PGA Tour earn FedEx Cup points, so those who play primarily on other tours won't have points assigned to their name on the final results.
South Africa’s Branden Grace, for example, who finished third at the PGA Championship behind winner Jason Day and second-place finisher Jordan Spieth, primarily plays on the European Tour, a PGA Tour spokesman told Q&A on the News in an email.
The FedEx Cup standings determine which golfers qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which consist of four events and culminate with the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club.
Golfers receive points “based on their results, with a strong emphasis placed on winning and high finishes,” the PGA Tour states on its website.
Spieth leads this year’s Fed Ex Cup standings with 4,169 points, followed by Day (2,459), Bubba Watson (2,407), Jimmy Walker (2,014) and Justin Rose (1,742).
Q: Is CNN founder Ted Turner the largest landowner in the United States?
—William McKee Jr., Flowery Branch
A: Turner, who also owned TBS, the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks, is the second largest landowner in the United States, behind John Malone, the chairman of Liberty Media.
Malone owns 2.2 million acres, surpassing Turner, who owns about 2 million acres, including 15 ranches in seven states.
Turner also owns three ranches in Argentina.
