Q: It was sad to see that Muhammad Ali had passed. He was a great, great guy. How were his finances when he died?
— Andy Webster, Douglasville
A: Ali was worth between $50 million to $80 million when he died June 3, according to NBCNews.com, but a friend told ETonline.com that Ali gave away some of his money.
Tim Shanahan, who was described as a “longtime friend” by ETonline.com, the website for “Entertainment Tonight,” said Ali “was never interested in spending money on himself.”
NBCNews.com reported Ali sold “an 80 percent stake in the right to license his name and brand for $50 million to CKX Inc.” in 2006.
Also that year, Forbes reported Ali was worth $55 million.
Ali’s estate likely will grow after his death.
“His name and likeness will continue to be a highly valuable commodity for many years to come,” an advertising executive told NBCNews.com.
